This source booklet is an effort to analyse the media developments in Bulgaria after the political changes since 1989. It is divided into two major parts: the first one presents the changes in the Bulgarian mass media landscape (press, radio, television, Internet, media education, professional organisations). It also describes the regulation processes of electronic media. The second part consists of source data on publications on mass media.
The growing role of the mass media in the period of transition has changed the status, rights and responsibilities of media professionals. The changes have made some journalists media celebrities, with a strong hold on public opinion. The mass media system is now often operating as a Fourth Estate, influencing social attitudes, politica opinions and decision-making on national priorities.
